Sanjocho Neighborhood

We mostly explored food and necessities in Sanjocho (google map location), but there are also many clothing, wagashi (Japanese sweets), kimono, pottery, washi (hand-made paper), and other shops interspersed with kyo-machiya (traditional Kyoto houses; most are private residences though a few are open for viewing). Most of the non-food shops are open between 10:30-5 PM.

For details about the following neighborhood restaurants, see our Food in Kyoto page.

Kyo-Machiya Kyoto Shijo Kuon – a tasty keema curry/udon restaurant inside a remodeled kyo-machiya

Shunsai Imari – obanzai breakfast and dinner

Kyoto Tsumiki – a local parfait restaurant

Kanoya Rokaku Honten – a neighborhood fruit and vegetable store with a nice variety and good prices.

Tsukitokage – a local izakaya with a modern feel and diverse clientele (e.g., not many salarymen)

Ikkakuju – Shijo Shimmachi – tasty okonomiyaki, betayaki, negiyaki and ryuyaki. Try their gluten-free yuba okonomiyaki!

Life – Shijo Karasuma (website; location) – the best supermarket in the area. Fresh, tasty, cheap bento and sushi; good produce, meat and fish selection; good selection of staples. Interestingly, not seen on Google Maps unless you actually type in the name. We stumbled across it while visiting a Fresco market (which is shown on Google Maps).

Nearby: Kyoto Sanjo Shopping Street (website; location) – this is a shopping street that caters primarily to locals. Restaurants, kimono shops, barber shops, pharmacies, produce, fish and meat sellers…
